I am a 21 year old female who is married to a 29 year old white male. I love
my husband deeply and believe it or not we live Tennessee and don't really experience
any raccial discrimination. We have a new baby now and people around don't seem
to pay much at tention to us at all. I think that is wonderful and all but we
are thinking of moving away from here some day. I wonder how other couples are
being treated ever where else. Don't give up, God is with us!!

Reading the comments from people in interracial relationships and the problems they still face in society leads me to conclude that being in a interracial relationship today (especially between black and white) is like being gay in the 1960's. Today, a re lationship between two men or two women is being more readily accepted by society(refer to "Ellen" on ABC TV) than the relationships between a black and a white person. Ironic, isn't it?

Hello World Friends! This has been an uplifting find on the Internet! So much loving support and encouraging letters from kindred spirits. I noticed that under "songs" there are only three titles about racial harmony. Since music is so important as fo od for the soul, can we add to this list? Raising children in a multi-racial family, I've found how valuable music can be to inspire and sustain--especially young hearts!
I'd like to add to the list: DC Talk "Colored People" and Traci Chapman "New Beginning".
Anymore great songs about the Oneness of Humanity?

As a black female involved in an interracial relationship, I've found the Durham/Chapel Hill area to be IC Friendly. I've lived in the area for almost 4 years and never had any problems. The area has 2 major universities and is inclined to have educated and open-minded individuals. I also lived in the eastern part of NC (Greenville to be excact) and I found it more difficult there. It is a smaller town and doesn't have as many "transplants" as the Triangle area. Good luck!

I am a 42 year old female who has been categorized as Negro then Black now African American, the latter being more approriate in my mind due to the fact that the majority of Afr. Amns. cannot trace their roots directly to Africa.
After reading t he discussion forum on identifying oneself, i found that some have reach the same conclusion that I did which is race is becoming an irrelevant and obselete term in light of the fact that the US is becoming increasingly more diverse. I hope "race" is dele ted from the next census form. Because of my racial background which is a mixture of African, European and American Indian (I dare not venture into percentages because I don't know how much of who or what), multi racial is a better term but no term is bes t.
Race has been a curiosity of mine ever since I started hearing stories of my maternal and paternal ancestry. When I look at my extended family, I see bits of all races mixed...european features on someone with african hair, yellowish skin on another, high cheekbones and small eyes on someone else. Because of my skincolor, I've experienced racial taunts and teases from my own "group". The childhood retort "sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt" was a lie for me and it has taken these many years to become comfortable with who I am and how I am wonderfully made by God.
This brings me to what I would like to know. I am attempting to wirte a romance-adventure story with an African American female / Asian male rel ationship. I would be interested in comments from those in a gender/racial relationship or marriage such as this. I would like the characters voices to sound as authentic as possible. When I concieved this idea, my thought was that if they are two human b eing who share the same American general culture, there is always the possibilty of an attraction. The conflicts arise over other issues. Please send any helpful comments. Thank you.

I really like this site! It's wonderful being able to hear about so many successful interracial relationships. I am a 24 year old White female. My husband is a very hansome Black man from The Gambia (West Africa.) We have a beautiful two-year-old daug hter. There are a lot of differences for us other than race, which includes culture and religion. He is Moslem and I am Christian, yet we come together when it comes to our child. We are trying really hard to teach her to be proud of both of her herita ges, and to give enough information about both religions to help her in making the choice which is right for her. At first my mom was devistated, but now after much prayer, my husband is just like her son. She can't get enough of us. We live in Kentuc ky and she is in Tennessee, but we visit her quite often. Being in the South we get a lot of looks, but that's as far as it goes. We are both confident in both ourselves and each other enought overlook their ignorance. Again, great site

I was looking up the genealogy of my English wife Jo-Ann when I stumbled upon this interesting site. Keep up the good work.
Jo-Ann and I have celebrated 13+ years of happy marriage and have 3 lovely children, Laren (12) Caris (9) and Elise (7). Glad to know that many of you are enjoying inter-cultural marriage/relationships. Perhaps my wife would agree with me on the following recipe for a happy IC relationship based on our experience -
- Both of us are committed Christian, hav ing served in cross-cultural mission environment,
- We speak 4 languages between us, including Chinese Mandarin,
- Our parents gave us their blessings from the start and we continue to include our parents and relatives in our social life ,
- Intellectual compatibility,
- Expect and recognise cultural differences in thinking patterns, attitudes, words and conduct, (East & West are exact opposites in many areas !),
- Be natural and cherish the other half as uniqu e and special,
- Take long walks together, relax and enjoy each other's company,
- Enjoy each other's cooking (Chinese, European, Indian and Malaysian),
- Have great pride in the children. Encourage them not only to excel and s et good example because they are special and gifted but also to befriend and respect others.
Hope our experience could be of some help to other ICs like us.
We would like to meet the IIA members in Brisbane, Australia. Is there a chapt er of the IIA here ?

I am a white female who is married to a black man. we have a beautiful daughter who is 18 months old. So far we have not had any negative remarks made to us about her. Everyone remarks on how beautiful she is, plus she is very friendly so she makes eve ryone smile. My husband and I talk a little about our concerns, but I keep thinking if we just raise her with lots of love and give her the knowledge she needs to understand that society may not except her, but always remind her that she is special and u nique that she will not have adjustment problems. My daughter is light and her hair is thin and curly. She could probably pass for a mexican or spanish child, but no negative comments have been made. If anyone lives in the Indianapolis area and is curr ently in an interracial marriage with biracial children, I would love to correspond with you and possibly meet to hang out together. This is a great association.

Dear IIA
A commentary.
I am a single Black-American male, who's proud that I prefer to date interracially. Because I am multi-lingual (I actually do speak, read, etc. in five (5) languages), those who know me say that it is NO surprise, that if I am multi-lingual, and can transcend cultural barriers, then I would (of course) prefer to date multi-culturally/"interracially". But my pet peeves are:
1- while some propose that it's more update and modern to be non-/anti racial (especailly since it became "fashionable to be antiracist after the Civil Rights Movement of the '60s), it is still "the" promonent fact thta in America, non-caucasians are NOT that promanet in society.
2- :Interracial" dating is still NOT accepted within this country (But I have experienced one time too many, that "outside" the US, some if NOT many other societies [even in Japan] interracial-"ism" is more accepted, than in the so-called "free" society of the USA.
I'm NOT anti-US, but I have noticed, witnessed and experienced differnet racial acceptance attitudes in other parts of the world. Within the US, interracial interaction is mostly behind closed doors, though gradually it's tolerated by apathetic "caucasian" observers.
Lastly, I get extremely annoyed that some Black-American women look at interracial couples with hostility. Why should a personal choice between individuals become a public, even political issue for other non-understanding people to gossip about.
Thought I am NOT entirely pass the racial commentaries of our times, I'm proud of my openmindnes s, and occasional pride when I see an interracial couple; two people who at least for that time, can bypass the superficial barriers of thier pigmentation. It's a start.
"Keep-on Keeping on Baby!!!"

I am very glad to have found this site. I am happy to say that I have raised two children without prejudice, however all of my family is not the same way and I know there will be problems oncee they are told of the situation. My daughter is unmarried, pregnant by a man (of another race) who wants nothing to do with the child, however my daughter is determined to have the baby, who will be loved unconditionally by her and her immediate family, but I am certain of other family problems down the road.
Is there any place for grandparents to discuss this issue? It would be so helpful to share some of our common concerns Thank you very much.

Like many others, I came across this site while wandering around the net. Also, like many others I have found it to be most interesting and informative.
My wife and I (white/black) have been married for more than 30 years. For the most part, ou r arrangement has been accepted by most. Rarely if ever, have we had to deal with some of the experiences similar couples have had to face in the United States. Although Canada is more of a nation of cultures than a meltinmg pot, there hasn't been a maj or problem with people intermingling with those outside their immediate community. From reading the various comments posted in the Association, that does not appear to be the case in the United States.
As I noted, my wife and I have been marri ed for over 30 years now and that means we are approaching the age where retirement is a close reality. As such, we would like to make plans to ensure those years are a full as possible. For us, that means travel which in turn generates the question, "W ould it be possible for a couple such as ourselves to be comfortable travelling throughout the entire United States?"
Comments/suggestions would be much appreciated.

I stumbled across your yesterday, and I am compelled to
commend you on your brilliant efforts to establish a
forum for people who care more about the person than
colour of skin or ethnic background.
The corollary of racism is that wh en racists create
the society they want, ie only those of the same race
live in the same place, town, city, country, they will turn
to some other means of distinguishing a group they fear
will get a share of the resources (whatever those are).
Witness Bosnia, Hutu Tutsi.
In the perfect world of the racist where only
those the same race as themselves live, these same racists
could find themselves at the butt of 'racial' attacks
because of their, eye or hai r colour, accents, size,
physical appearance e.g. low forehead v high forehead.
It doesn't take much stretch of imagination
to see how futile the whole issue of race is.
Unfortunately, the race issue is real and governs
some p eople's behaviour and attitude to others.
The media can go along way in altering peoples
attitudes and mindsets.
Your site has made a significant leap along
that way.

Does racial harmony effect the economy? I'm researching ways that the diverse races compliment one another, and would like to include the economy in this query. It makes sense, does it not, that united we stand. Divided we fall. We can see results that when a company, or business, is united, the results are a better work environment and productive level. How about a community, and country at large? LOOKING FOR INSIGHTFUL IDEAS on projects that support this theme. Mare Said

Hi ( : to all the interracial couples out there! It's been great reading all of your posts. I am a latina who has been involved with a wonderful caucasion man for almost five years now. We are both 24 (born 3 days apart) and very in love with one another.
His father and I seem to have a love/hate relationship. Deep inside, I know he is basically a good person. He has done a lot for me. But I also know that he is very bigoted and narrow-minded. He was raised that way (his alcoholic father's influence). He is filled with rage at the world.
Anyway, recently we found out we both met eachother when we were about five years old. I always had had a memory of going to a petting zoo with my mother and wandering away from her. I wound up outside a small pen where kids could touch the animals inside. There I saw a little boy crying, bawling his eyes out. He had gotten kicked in the teeth by an animal and was embarrassed because other kids were pointing. I remember that our e yes locked and I felt really sorry for him because he seemed nice.
Well, his father ran over crazed and was like, "Did somebody hit you!!! Tell me!" My boyfriend said "No!" and pointed to the animal. I recall that even after he told him the truth, his father gave me and another kid a really hateful look. His mother looked at his father like she disapproved. Then I looked at my boyfriend and he seemed embarrassed and sorry. I heard my mother calling me and walked away.
I was really suprised when I found out that that boy had been my boyfriend. His mother just started talking about it the other day and we realized (of course she didn't mention her husband's reaction). This is just one of the few weird things that ma kes me believe there is more to life than what we can see--be it color or whatever. Everybody is so hung up on race and culture. In the end, we all leave our bodies behind. I wish more people would consider which sentiments and feelings toward humanity they also leave.

My parents and family are supportive of me i guess you could say i haven't really asked their opionion but they do know he's white and h aven't said anything so i guess it's cool. My sister is older (18) and she has a white boyfriend too and my parents like him. I'm not really sure about his parents even though he says they like whoever he likes, but i don't know, i have the support of hi s sister who's 19 she's a sweetheart so i figure if they had two great kids maybe they'll cool with it.Wish me luck, things seem to be going good so far, best of luck with your dad

i grew up in an interracial family (mother and self white, stepfather, stepbrother and stepsister african-american). it wasn't easy - not only was there tension from outside the family, but there was a lot of tension inside the family, too. we lived in a w orking class, mostly white neighborhood, and although there were some difficult times at first (i had to fight a few people in school because of things they'd said about my stepfather or one of my stepsiblings) after a while most people accepted us.
i like your site, and i intend to come back and visit again. i'd be interested in hearing from others who grew up in situations similar to mine.
thanks again.

From 1989 to 1992 I dated, loved and adored a very lovely and loving African-American woman. Most people at my retail work-place accepted us with no qualms. Since we broke up (due to my parental non-acceptance) I have had numerous friends and associates state that we were a beautiful couple. Someday (soon I hope) I will meet another young African-American woman that I can build and complete a very solid and lasting relationship. These relationships do work and are just another aspect of changing world. It is another one of God's way to show we can live and interact in racial and human harmony.

Who speaks for you? Who speaks for us? Encourage awareness for America's
growing mixed-race population!
A new magazine addressing the mixed race experience is under
development. Currently, the staff is made up of college students from
across the U.S. The magazine is primarily geared towards creating a pan
collegiate resource for mixed race/multiracial individuals and
organizations on college campuses. We would like to encourage anyone to
inquire about obtaining copies for their organization, or contributing
their talents to the magazine. The magazine's premier issue includes
political analysis, historical background, poetry, and photography among
other topics.
An intelligent, comprehensive voice for th e rising generation of our
country's mixed race population is a necessity. We have a unique
perspective and voice that needs to be heard. We need a voice that
unites us while it informs the rest of America.
Please e-mail me at the add ress below for additional information
regarding possible subscription, questions, or if you would like to
contribute. A reply does not require any obligation! We only want to get
a mailing list of interested college students and organizations. Second,
please include an e-mail and street address where you can be reached
over the summer. Finally, also include the e-mail address(es) of anyone
else who may be interested in information or forward this message.
As of right now, th is is the most important action we can take.
Mailings will most likely occur during the Fall 1998
semester. Thank you, and remember, we need a voice to represent us!

Our family is thrilled to find this web site. I am German and Puerto Rican. And my husband is Africian -American. We have four beautiful daughters. And we live in the south. We have not encountered very much racial conflict. And we feel this is beca use of our attitudes. We know there is nothing wrong with us being together. And if other people are uncomfortble with it that is something that they have to deal with. Not us. We welcome any comments from anyone. We are very, very pleased to see oth er people out there who want to communicate.

i was browsing through your page and became interested in some of the comments made by the contributors.
i am a black female 33 and divorced. i have never dated outside my race. it has never seemed necessary for me to date anything but black men.
however, over the past few years, i have stumbled upon a serious snag in my dating relationships. i can't find any black men who aren't "intimidated" by my level of education or my outspoken opinions. i don't think i'm over ly educated or overly o utspoken, i'm just me.
i feel that i will eventually be forced to date outside my race. i don't want to be alone the rest of my life and it seems sad to stick to just one type of person.
my problem is, i don't know where i can meet, or talk to m en outside my race (who would be interested in dating a black woman). i am currently in graduate school in the state of alabama. there doesn't seem to be a lot of "love" for any person of color here, so i can't begin to imagine dating someone who isn't black in alabama. therefore, i am alone and searching. i would take any suggestions on how to meet people (men) interested in interracial dating.
i am familiar with interracial dating (my brother married a white woman), any suggestions will be gr eatly appreciated and even put to the test. thanks

I purposely came to your page because I had heard about it before. I just want to say that I think that what you have is a great thing. Personally, I have never dated outside of my race but I do not in any way disapprove of anyone who decides to do so. I am lucky in that my parents raised me to accept all people...color was never an issue with us. I have been able to meet so many people and to learn so much about different cultures and I thank God that my parents raised us the way they did. I was ori ginally raised in the north but moved to the south a couple of years ago. I immediately noticed that things are not the same. I have noticed that people tend to associate with people that look like them (race). I tend to associate with people no matte r who they are...as long as they are fun to be with.
Anyway, once again, congratulations on your site. I also wish the best to those couples that are involved in interracial relationships..especially to those in "small towns"...don't let people get y ou down.
I would love to receive email from anyone interested in writing to me.

Hello everyone,
I was going through a friends homepage and came across this
site. I'm very pleased to see that many people believe in
and have the same views as I have on interracial relationships. I'm a 25 year old African-American male who
was raised in the south.(Baton Rouge,La) I grew up around
racism and bigotry but was raised to accept people for who
they are not what color they are. For anyone out there who believes in God, claim to be a Christian but can't deal with i nterracial relationships, I hope you read this: God
created EVERYONE equally no matter what ethnic background
you come from. Why do you think God created various races
of people? I'll tell you why: Its simple; God wants all of
us to live together is complete peace and harmony giving
you and I the choice to follow our heart to love and be
loved. A word to the wise and ignorant: you can't control
who you fall in love with. I've dated asian, native american, indian, black, white , mexican, puerto rican, etc.
A person is a person is a person. Get it? If anyone want to
share there experiences with me, feel free to email me at
dsmoove1@hotmail.com or dedrico@hotmail.com Love sees no
color ya dig?

Hello.
I am a journalist writing a story about inter-racial re;ationships, primarily Black-White and Hispanic-White. Would anyone have any recent statistics about how many of these relationships there are in the U.S. in 1998 or 1997 compared to maybe 5 years ago?
Any info someone could provide would be appreciated. I will also need the source of these stats so that I can include this in the story.
Thank you. Steve Whipple

Hello!
I just stumbled onto the site today, and I'm glad to know it exists. I am 29 and have dated interracially for most of my twenties. This is probably because I went to a racially mixed high school
(most of my graduating class were neo-hippi es: their heroes were Dylan and the Beatles). I like all kinds of music (I'll be going to Metallica in Atlanta this summer). I haven't really had any problems when I go out,
and my family have reconcilled themselves to the fact that I will date whom ever I choose. I currently live in Athens, which has a great combination of small town charm and progressive thinking. There's a wonderful
racially mixed church here in Atlanta called Chapel Hill Harvester Church, which is nondenominational as has qui te a few members with lots of young people.
Love is precious, and hard to find. Don't limit yourself, just stay true to your spirit.
As you can see, I love to type. Feel free to e-mail me.
