I am a 26 year old white female married to a 34 year old black male. We have
been married for 5 years and together 8 years all together. The situations my
husband and I come across come from individuals we don't even know. The looks,
the remarks, the wispers and snickers are unfortunately from black women and
white men. The attitudes we receive from others does not affect us or our relationship
because these people do not know anything about us or our relationship. When
the attitudes we receive come from friends and family it hits a little harder
but our love and respect for each other and our friends and family helps us
to keep trying to educate them. The only real family problems we have had has
been from his side of the family, but I now realize that the way they feel comes
from hurt and anger. They do respect me to the fullest because of the love they
have for my husband and our children and one day they will learn to love me
for me too. In the area we live in everyone has treated us as any other couple
in the neighborhood. They respect both of us and love our children, most of
them have said color never entered their minds, others have said that they can
look past the color and see who we are inside.
